In Dubai horse racing is very popular and the Dubai World Cup,which started in 1996, is world renowned.On 29th March 2008 the world's richest horse race with a purse of $USD 6 million was held.
There are 2 racecourses in Dubai: Nad Al Sheba and the Jebel Ali Racecourse. The Nad Al Sheba opened in 1986 and from November through March races are held. The three races are: the Winter Racing Challenge (WRC),the Dubai International Racing Carnival ( DIRC) and the Dubai World Cup ( DWC).It has a 2,200 meter dirt racetrack.
The Jebel Ali Racecourse was constructed in 1990. Just like the Nad Al Sheba Horse Race Club it has a track of 2200 meters made of a mixture of sand and oil. The difference though is that this is a right handed racetrack while the other one is a left handed course.
